On Thursday 24 October, 2024, the Ministry of Digital Transformation (MDT) and The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) signed to a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) focused on creating learning opportunities that will aid in advancing the local cybersecurity landscape.
As indicated by Mr. Wayne Nakhid, National Chief Digital Officer, MDT, “This MOU represents a crucial step in enhancing cybersecurity services in Trinidad and Tobago and highlights our commitment to building local talent and expertise to protect our nation’s digital infrastructure.”
The MOU outlines several key initiatives for collaboration, including: ·
- Cybersecurity Courses: opportunities will be made available, at no cost, to registered members of the MDT’s D’Hub programme, to enhance their skills in this high-demand field. ·
- Real-World Projects and Internships: students of the UTT will have access to more practical, industry-relevant experience through partnerships with MDT, ensuring they are well-prepared for future careers in cybersecurity. ·
- Research Innovation: MDT and UTT will collaborate on cybersecurity research, driving innovation and developing solutions that address real-world challenges.
The ceremony, which took place at UTT’s Tamana Campus, was attended by key officials, including Professor Clément Imbert (Emeritus) O.R.T.T., Chairman of the Board of Governors, UTT, Mr. Cory Belfon, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Digital Transformation, and Professor Stephen Joseph, President (Ag), UTT.
In his address to attendees, Professor Imbert commended the collaboration between MDT and UTT, and underscored the role this partnership will play in bolstering Trinidad and Tobago’s cybersecurity capabilities. He acknowledged the recent success of the pilot collaboration of both entities earlier this year when the UTT delivered a live, instructor led training course: “Introduction to Cybersecurity” to the D’Hub community. An average of 110 participants attended each session, with 91% expressing satisfaction with the programme, and 95% affirming that they would be willing to recommend it to others. These results not only underscore UTT’s ability to deliver training that blends theoretical knowledge with practical application but also reflect the enthusiasm of D’Hub members eager to build skills in this critical field, a testament to the strong support from both MDT and UTT.
This MOU is a key step in strengthening Trinidad and Tobago’s Cybersecurity capacity and building a skilled local workforce. As digital systems play a larger role in daily life and essential services, MDT and UTT’s collaboration expands the opportunities for training, research, and growth for D’Hub members. The collaboration contributes to the goal of creating a secure digital future, while empowering citizens to participate confidently in a safe digital economy.
